Kargil is the second town of Ladakh and is located on the bank of Suru River. One of the awe-inspiring landscapes in Ladakh is the Suru Valley, which forms the base of the Kargil district.
Suru Valley is situated in the northeastern foothills of the holy Himalayas and is an untouched land of tranquil and natural beauty. During summer, the entire Suru valley appears like a bride adorned with garlands of flowers. This is why it is also considered as the greenest valley of the Greater Himalayas.

Kartse Khar: Near Sankoo village is located an ancient village named kartse khar, which is famous for a 7-meter tall rock carved statue of the Maitreya Buddha. This statue dates back to the 7th century and is the tallest statue of the Buddha after the Bamiyan in Afghanistan.
